Wayfarers Win!

Our Wayfarers team kicked off their 2024 season with a Cup Win over Southendown, dedicating the win to their sponsor DP Mowers.  It was a close fought game in most pairings, except for the Captains Pair, who were not so close, communicating by mobile phone on the 17th to see who’s ball to play.  There is a great buzz across the squad to go get the treble this year, so good luck from Llanwern

Facelift for the Furniture

Big Kev has been busy this past week getting the Patio furniture ready for our long awaited summer!! He has been busy planing, sanding and repainting our patio furniture so it looks tip top just in time to enjoy some outside drinks (hopefully in the sun!!)

Thanks again for all of our volunteers tireless efforts that often go unnoticed.

Keep up the great work

Captains Drive-In

On Saturday we saw incoming Captain Neil Powell drive in followed by a shotgun start Texas Scramble. It was a great turnout for Neil with all slots being filled.

The day started off grey and cold but Neil soon warmed things up by calmly striping his Drive 210 yards straight down the middle with a baby draw!!

Gareth and the team had put in an incredible effort and the course was in fantastic condition and it was nice to be back on the grass tees as well. It was also nice that I managed to play as well and enjoyed a game with Mike, Luke, and Ella.

After the game, everybody enjoyed a delicious curry in the clubhouse along with the presentation.

Well done to all the winners.

Pencil Tining

This week Gareth and the team have been flat out again. The turnaround in the course as I'm sure you all agree has been nothing short of amazing.

This week they have spiked the greens with a 10 mm solid tine to a depth of 6". This will aid aeration, help break up compaction, reduce thatch, and assist with drainage. Fingers crossed the weather behaves itself and stays dry and will allow them to top dress next week which will help fill in the holes providing a smoother putting surface.

All of the mowers have been in action and cutting has been the order of the day. This cutting and recent dry weather will also see holes 4 & 5 being back in play on Saturday in time for the Captain’s Drive-in.

Keep up the good work team.

Spring is springing

We don’t want to speak too soon but things are looking like they have finally turned a corner with the weather!!! Gareth and the team have been working tirelessly cutting like crazy now the ground is starting to dry up nicely. They have been able to get machinery down onto the 4th and 5th and have them back looking like golf holes once again after a great effort.

Buggies are allowed back out and hopefully the worst winter I can ever remember is now behind us.

Steve and Lukes Half Marathon Final Charity Amount

We have had the final monies in from our recent Newport Half Marathon Charity run. We are pleased to say we raised just shy of £300 for our Captains chosen Charity, Bowel Cancer. We would like to say a Big Thank you to everybody that generously donated to such a fantastic cause.

Much Love

News from the Course

As everybody is well aware this has been one of the most challenging of winters for golf courses and clubs around the country. We would like to thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support with the interrupted course openings etc.

In good news though we are now looking forward to Spring........

The weather is slowly starting to dry out and after a fantastically windy and dry Tuesday Gareth and the boys have managed to get out and start cutting some grass. (The wind did however blow down a Poplar tree between the 14th and 15th holes last weekend).

Whats happened this past week

The greens are still being cut at 6mm (winter height) but with a continued dry spell we should be able to lower them to 4mm.

Grass coverage on the newly resurfaced 14th tee is looking good, healthy and strong.

We have taken delivery of 30 tonne of sand for top dressing and topping up the bunkers.

Fertilizers and Weed killer have been applied

Hopefully next week we will be able to micro tine the greens if the weather stays dry. We were hoping to hollow core previously but the weather has not allowed this to happen.

For now though we would appreciate everybody doing a sun dance for the next few weeks!!!
