New Leadership for Wayfarers!

Following two of the most exciting people in Team Golf Management, Craig Williams & Adrian Hughes moving on, the Llanwern Wayfarers squad remains in good hands.  David Wood (pictured right) is taking over as Captain, Redge Slade as Vice-Captain, and Salvatore Scarpato as Secretary.  This new management has a great foundation to build even more success for our Wayfarers squad.

We would like to thank Craig & Adrian for their support in growing Wayfarers Golf at Llanwern, and invite anyone interested in enjoying the best team golf at Llanwern for 2025 to get in touch.

Jack at The Dunhill Links!

It was fantastic to see some of our members, Jacks Family, along with our Club Manager and Peter Malpas, making the journey last week to support Jack at the Dunhill Links. As a club, we couldn't be prouder of you JD! We loved the photos your dad and family shared with us.

Also, what a special experience this week having legendary caddie Johnny 'Long Sock' McLaren on the bag. Johnny is a well-known figure on tour, with a remarkable resume that includes many wins, recently with Paul Casey, and having reached world number one and a Ryder Cup victory with Captain Luke Donald.

We can’t wait to hear all the stories when you’re back at the club, Jack!

WJRD Cup

A special memorial golf match in honor of WRJ Davidson, a former captain, president, and long-serving administrator at Llanwern Golf Club, took place with a Ryder Cup-style format last weekend. His son, Jonathan (known as Captain Crunch), and his grandson, Jack, captained two opposing teams in this 36-hole event, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated many years to the club. The match was closely contested, with Captain Crunch’s team edging out a 4 ½ to 3 ½ victory.

The day was filled with excitement, competitive spirit (and alcohol!!), with both teams showing great camaraderie. A standout moment came from junior Drew Morgan, who was a last-minute substitute. In the morning foursomes, Morgan and Brown delivered a stunning finish, carding a 3, 3, 2, 2 in the final four holes to beat Captain Crunch and Robbo on the last hole, a performance that was widely praised by both teams and one Drew will never forget.

After the match, players and supporters gathered at the clubhouse to celebrate WRJ Davidson’s legacy, sharing stories and reflecting on his lasting impact on the club. The event is set to become an annual tradition, ensuring that Davidson’s contributions and passion for Llanwern Golf Club will be remembered for years to come.

With the success of this inaugural match, the stage is set for future competitions, continuing the spirit of friendly rivalry and honoring the beloved former captain’s memory.

Challenge Cup

Last weekend saw the second playing of the now annual Challenge Cup event between our Wayfarers & Halletts Teams.  Congratulations to Wayfarers who managed to secure the victory and retain the Challenge Cup.  The Matches were close fought this year, with many going down to the last couple of holes, but the talented Wayfarers came through.  The Matches were followed by the now default meal and speeches, and kitties behind the bar, making the whole day a great event for all.  Both teams have had good success this year representing the club, and look to go further next year.  Our thanks to all who support team golf at Llanwern.

Course Maintenance

Gareth and the team have started the Autumn Course maintenance program this week in preparation for the wetter months.

This week they have solid tined the greens with 10mm tines to a depth of 5 inches. Now we all know this can be frustrating but there are many reasons behind it.

Solid tining involves puncturing small holes into the surface of the golf green using solid metal tines (as opposed to hollow ones which remove plugs of soil). This process serves several important purposes:

Improve air circulation: Solid tining helps introduce oxygen into the root zone, which is essential for healthy grass growth.

Enhance water infiltration: By creating channels, tining allows water to penetrate deeper into the soil rather than running off the surface. This promotes deeper root growth and prevents surface compaction.

Reduce soil compaction: Constant foot traffic, golf carts, and mowing cause soil compaction, which restricts root growth and water movement. Solid tining alleviates this by loosening the soil.

Encourage healthy root development: The holes allow roots to spread deeper and wider, leading to a healthier, more resilient turf.

Facilitate nutrient uptake: Aerating the soil improves the ability of grass to absorb nutrients, leading to greener and more vigorous growth.

Cock ‘O’ North

Long time members David Wood and Salvatore Scarpato spent last weekend at the La Touquet golf resort undertaking some warm weather training preparing for this years cock of the north competition!! As always too much beer was involved, slightly affecting the golf but they said it was a pleasure playing the great course.
